Glossary

Cool Roofing: A modern roofing technology involving light colored coatings that are reflective of ultra violet rays in order to keep roofs cooler in the summer months and reduce energy costs by cutting down on air conditioning.

Elastomeric Coating: A flexible polymer or acrylic coating that can be applied over a number of roofing styles and materials. Its elasticity allows it to expand and contract to prevent cracking and leaks that are caused from the natural shifting and settling of homes and commercial properties.

Energy Efficient Roofing: A trend and technological advancement in roofing whereby certain styles such as paint and light colored reflective coating is used to reduce the amount of heat that is absorbed by a roof, in turn decreasing the energy use that it takes to keep the interior of a home cool.

Metal Roofing Systems: A roofing style that uses stainless steel and other metals to create a strong and weatherproof cover for homes and businesses. Metal roofs traditionally have been susceptible to rusting and corrosion, but advances in galvanized materials and roof coatings have made them one of the strongest roofing materials in use today.

Polymer: A polymer, scientifically, is any substance that consists of molecular components of the same type that are bound together. Many roof coatings and paints are polymers in nature and create to a strong surface that is protective against water and weather.

Roof Coating: Any number of polymer or acrylic coatings that are used to strengthen a roof, make it more durable, protect it from water and reflect ultraviolet rays away from the structure to cool it and reduce energy costs.

Solar Reflective Coating: A white or light colored roof coating that has reflective elements in order to redirect sun and UV rays away from a roof in order to keep it cooler and reduce energy costs.

White Roofing: A cool roofing solution that involves the coating of shingles or other roofing materials with a thick white substance that reflects solar rays away from a building and helps reduce the amount of heat that is absorbed into a building, therefore reducing energy usage in the summer.
